It would seem that my society hates the word faith. Most people don't like to be accused of "believing" in things. They are simply too smart to "believe."
The honest truth is that it's impossible not to believe - not to have faith. I'm not talking about God or religion. I'm talking about your world view.
Whether you admit it or not, you most certainly believe in gravity and the passing of time. These two "truths" are virtually universally accepted (i.e. believed). You believe these things because you have observed them personally. You have felt the effects of gravity when you fell down. And you have felt the passing of time as a holiday draws closer.
But you probably also believe that the earth is round and that the earth rotates around the sun. You believe these things because someone told you they are true. Oh, you can see how it makes sense. You think you understand that the earth is round because of the disappearing horizon. And you think you understand the arrangement of the solar system because of the changing seasons. But the truth is that you've never personally observed either of these scientific explanations to be true. (Unless you are an astronaut, in which case, never mind.) You accept these explanations for the world around you because someone said so, and it makes sense.
I claim that your world view is based on both A) observed experience (empirical evidence) and B) the witness of men (written or oral). Though much of your world view can claim column A, there must be much that comes from column B. It is simply impossible for you to have personally observed all that you believe.
Now, let me make a quick and very important distinction at this point. There are many things that you "know" (really believe) that have little or no bearing on your life. As the saying goes,
what does that have to do with the price of tea in China? You can believe things to be true without them ever affecting your life. But as a broad statement, your world view is how you make every decision in life, and so it has a great deal of influence on your life.
Having faith in something is not naughty. If you believe because you studied it in college, that's very intellectual of you. If you believe because you watched your cow being abducted by a spaghetti monster, that's very odd. But regardless, don't be ashamed to believe. And if you believe because you have neither the testimony of man or a personal observation, then you have a blind faith. And that my friend is completely different.
